For years the Stanserhorn Cable Car has been committed to a sustainable development on the mountain. Step by step the buildings and the cable car had been renovated. In the process, renewable energies and passive solar energy have been used thanks to a smart solar infrastructure on the mountain restaurant which had been built with local timber. The 56 m2 solar thermal installations generate around 25`000 kWh/a and the 24,7 kW PV plant generates 22`000 kWh/a. Added to the heat recovery, the cable cars generate around 60`000 kWh/a or roughly 11% of the overall energy requirement. In 2014, the building envelope of the lower station was renovated and attached to the local wood chips district heating system.

The Stanserhorn Cable Car uses solar energy and increases energy efficiencies in order to supply their cable cars with nothing but renewable energies. The solar modules of the 24,7 kW PV plant tolerate heavy snow loads and wind speeds up to 300 km/h. Annually the solar installation generates 22`000 kWh/a and the 56m2 solar thermal plant generates 25`000 kWh/a for hot water and heater support.

The restaurant uses the solar energy passively: Big window screens and an innovative architecture of local timber are the evidence of a smart solar infrastructure. Furthermore, there are no water pipes on the mountain. Rainwater is purified and used for the total water supply. The rainwater from the roof is treated to make it potable and the utility water is collected on the rooftop terrace, and thus, the entire Stanserhorn-system is autonomous in terms of their water supply.

The restaurant and the cold-storage room have their own heat recovery system. The Cabrio Cable Car operates on an extremely high efficient eco-mode and uses about 10% less energy annually than before the redevelopment. The renovation of the lower station in 2014 was the final step in the ecological expansion. The triple window glazing, the connection to the local wood chips district heating system and the modernisation of the building envelope were part of the energy -oriented refurbishment. For all these reasons, the Stanserhorn-Bahn receives the Swiss Solar Award 2015.
